Cecily's Biography

Name: Cecily Morgan Catherwood (the future Mrs. Finnigan)
Birthday: August 29, 1956
House: Former Gryffindor (years 1967-1974)
Year: Graduated in 1974
Kind of blood: Mostly pure
Pet: A rat named Lola

Physical Appearance:
Cecily is somewhat petite with an athletic build. She has sandy blonde hair that constantly varies in length because she likes to grow it out just to cut it short again. Her height and facial features cause her to look young for her age. This used to be a constant source of annoyance for her. There was a time when she would have decked – or, at least, wanted to deck – anyone who insisted that she could not possibly be the age she claimed to be, but she has outgrown that stage. Only took about twenty years.

Biography:
Childhood and Home Life
Cecily is the oldest of four children, but there are times when she still thinks of herself as an only child. Cecily was the only child in her parents’ lives for most of her childhood because her siblings (twins Belenus and Dugan, age 5; Edana, age 3) were born when Cecily was well into her teens.

Cecily’s parents, Brendan and Aine Catherwood, were very young when they had her. Cecily was born during the summer after her mother graduated from Hogwarts. Her father was only able to spend two days with her before his parents forced him to go back to school for his seventh year. While Brendan was at school, Aine and Cecily lived with Aine’s parents in Ireland. Cecily doesn’t have any memories from that year, but she knows that it’s the reason why she only saw that set of grandparents once a year, if that, when she was growing up.

Cecily’s early years were very unpredictable. Her parents got married the day after her father finished with school and moved into a flat in London shortly afterwards. Her father stayed with Cecily during the day while her mother worked in Flourish & Blotts. At night, they switched roles and her father went to work at the Leaky Cauldron while Aine took care of Cecily. Most of Cecily’s memories from that time revolve around the arguments that her parents would get into. Due to their busy schedules, they rarely got to spend more than ten minutes of their waking hours together and that time was usually spent arguing over petty things like who used up the last of the milk or whose turn it was to do the dishes. For years, Cecily lived with the fear that her father would follow through with his threats and leave them. By the time she was nine, she stopped worrying about this though. She decided that he would’ve done it already if it was what he really wanted.

Before going to Hogwarts, Cecily didn’t have much of an education. Her father taught her how to read, write, and do some basic math problems, but he was never a good student, so academics weren’t important to him. When she was old enough that he could stand taking her out in public, Brendan used to take Cecily on field trips around the wizarding world. Most of these trips took them to Quidditch stadiums or other sports-related locations.

For most of her life, Cecily was an only child. This changed on her fifteenth birthday when her mother announced that she was pregnant with twins. Several months later, two boys (Belenus and Dugan) were born. On Cecily’s seventeenth birthday, Aine announced that she was pregnant again. That time, she had a girl named Edana. On some level, Cecily realizes that the timing of these announcements wasn’t meant as a personal attack against her. It was just a convenient way of doing it since the entire family was gathered on both occasions. Unfortunately, Cecily is not rational enough to look at it that way, so the timing has only added to the animosity she feels when around her siblings.

Cecily’s mother has often been quoted saying that her life didn’t really begin until her daughter left for Hogwarts. And, in a way, that’s true. When they didn’t have to worry about looking after Cecily all of the time, the Catherwoods were free to take risks and go after their dreams. Aine had wanted to be a writer for as long as she could remember, so she applied for a job at Witch Weekly. In the years since then, she has become one of the magazine’s most famous columnists. With Cecily away at school, Brendan was able to act on one of his favorite hobbies, Quidditch. While he’s never been very good at playing, he is good with strategies, so he’s currently a coach for an Irish team, the Kenmare Kestrels. Since Aine’s current job allows her to work through correspondence, instead of constantly being there in person, the family picked up and moved to Ireland shortly after Christmas during Cecily’s fifth year.

Cecily knows that she should feel happy about the progress that her parents made, but she won’t let herself be proud. She can’t help being angry at them for not making it sooner. Her siblings are the ones who will really benefit from the changes in the family’s financial situation. They’ll grow up in a nice house with their own bedrooms instead of living in a tiny flat that smells like the fish market across the street. They’ll have a nanny to look after them instead of a cranky father who becomes angry every time they knock something over. They won’t grow up to think that they were Brendan and Aine’s “practice child.” They’ll know that they aren’t constant reminders of their parents' mistakes.

School Years
To no one’s surprise, Cecily was sorted into her parents’ former house, Gryffindor, when she started at Hogwarts. Like her parents, she has a tendency to act rashly without thinking about the consequences. She has her father’s fiery temper and her mother’s inability to let things slide. In other words, it’s easy to get on her bad side and very easy to remain there. Despite this, Cecily is a loyal friend and will always help out the people she cares for, even if she makes a point of complaining about how much they’re inconveniencing her.

Cecily’s school years went by far too quickly for her liking. She didn’t particularly care about her classes and was content to get by with mediocre grades, but she loved the freedom that came from being away from home. She always hated going home during the summers because she knew she would have to spend her vacation keeping house for her parents.

Post-Hogwarts
After a brief stopover at her parents’ new house, Cecily went to London – the city that she saw as her real home. She didn’t have any money or concrete plans, but several of her classmates had offered to let her crash on their couches if it came to that. Cecily spent approximately six months bouncing around the city, extending her “visits” to the point where even her closest friends began to hint that she might want to find her own flat.

When it finally became clear to her that she had outworn her welcome in the city, Cecily headed back to Ireland. With much reluctance, Cecily moved back in with her parents and became her siblings’ new nanny until her parents could find a suitable replacement. Three months later, Cecily was finally free from having to look after the “little brats” everyday, so she set out to find a real job. It didn’t take her long to get hired as a waitress at the Three Broomsticks.

At this point in her life, Cecily is still working at the pub, but she is no longer living with her parents. She moved out of their home a few days after her nineteenth birthday and shared a flat with two of her former classmates until one got married and the other moved back to England. At the present time, Cecily is living in Dublin with her maternal grandparents while she tries to save up for a place of her own. She briefly moved back in with her parents after leaving the flat she’d shared with her friends, but she couldn’t bring herself to agree with her mother’s idea that she should abide by the house rules as long as she lived there. After one particularly explosive argument, Cecily stormed out of the house and went to see her maternal grandparents because she knew it was the worst punishment she could give her mother.

Cecily’s relationship with her mother is currently very perfunctory. They spend time with each other when the family gathers together for special occasions (like Christmas), but they don’t have a personal connection anymore. Strangely enough, Cecily has become much closer to her father since she left Hogwarts. She is currently an assistant coach for the Kenmare Kestrels and has gained her father’s respect by helping develop several effective strategies for the team to use during their practices.

As far as the war goes, Cecily doesn’t know anything about it yet. When it’s reached a point where she can’t deny it anymore, she won’t be an active member of either side. She won’t agree with the principles guiding Voldemort, but she won’t let some old coot (i.e. Dumbledore) lead her blindly into a war she’s not up for fighting.

Likes: Quidditch, sports in general, London, Ireland, the Kenmare Kestrels, light reading materials (newspapers, magazines, etc.)

Dislikes: Fish, anything that smells like fish, anything that reminds her of fish, people who ask her too many questions, anything that makes her think a lot

Extracurricular Activities:
Cecily was a Beater for the Gryffindor team during her last three years at Hogwarts. She desperately wanted to be Gryffindor’s Captain during her seventh year and briefly quit the team when she found out she hadn’t been chosen. She ended up joining the team again after her replacement did a horrible job during the team’s first match and decided Quidditch wasn’t for him.

Romantic history:
Cecily is not a romantic in any sense of the word. Thanks to her parents, she has seen what “true love” can do to a person and it isn’t anything she wants to bring upon herself. She dated a few boys when she was at Hogwarts and has had a few flings since she left school, but she always ends the relationships before they can get too serious. Cecily tends to be very secretive when she’s seeing someone. During her childhood, she learned how casual details about one’s life can be thrown back at someone in the middle of an argument.

What was your character’s status before Dumbledore’s spell?
Cecily was one of the last people to arrive at Hogwarts on the day of the war. She had spent most of the day in Dublin, visiting her maternal grandmother. The two of them had seen owls coming in and out of the shop they were in and had heard rumors about an attack on Hogwarts, but Cecily didn’t believe it until a special edition of The Daily Prophet came out later that afternoon. After she saw the headlines on the newspaper, Cecily apparated to Hogsmeade and hurried up to the school. At the moment of the spell, she was searching for Seamus so she could bring him back home.
